Urine stains cannot be completely removed from pillow top mattresses.
The best solution is to buy a new mattress. Saving money shouldn't come at the expense of your health.
Trying to remove urine from your pillow top mattress (we don't recommend it):
• Cut out (and replace) any impacted foam (or materials) with the same density. You can ask the manufacturer for the same dimensions you plan to cut
• If cutting out the foam doesn't work, use an enzyme cleaner (see our detailed guide below).
• It is even more difficult to remove urine from pillow tops and coils than from memory foam alone.
Will Urine Permanently Damage My Pillow Top Mattress?
Most likely. Everything that can remove urine smells will also absorb into a pillow top (especially one with foam underneath).
If it's just a small amount of urine, you might be able to clean it, but anything else won't dry.
It might feel dry at first, but after some time the mattress will smell.
Mold spores (that form from the dry urine) can trigger asthma attacks!
5 Step Method To Get Urine Out Of Your Pillow Top Mattress
Here are 5 steps to get urine out of a pillow top mattress (it's unlikely to work given the severity of the stain:
1. Use an enzyme cleaner. You can find it at your local pet store or on Amazon.
2. Open your windows and turn on your fan. It is critical to have proper airflow.
3. Apply the entire enzyme cleaner to the entire affected area and inside it as well. Make sure you use twice as much as you think you need.
4. The solution will only work to a limited extent if you soak your foam in every area affected by urine.
5. Let your mattress air-out for 12-24 hours, then soak any damp areas with enzyme cleaner.
If you clean your mattress, the odor won't go away. Your mattress needs to be replaced.
The Saatva Classic mattress is our favorite. In euro-top mattresses such as the Saatva, foams are woven into the cover (to prevent future problems), so if you had a non-foam mattress later, any damage would be surface-level.
How To Prevent Future Stains & Odors From Urine On Your Pillow Top
Your mattress should be pet-free. A water- and urine-resistant mattress protector is also recommended.
A great investment under $30. Fully waterproof!
Does A Pillow Top Mattress Absorb Pee?
Yes. Pillow tops absorb pee.
Fibers absorb it completely, so it's nearly impossible to remove. This is why your mattress needs to be replaced. If you don't, you'll have serious odor problems. The smell of odors can be detected by bed bugs and other micro bugs.
It is not worth the risk!
How Long Does It Take For Urine To Soak Into A Pillow Top Mattress?
Urine can seep into a pillow top mattress within minutes, but the time it takes to fully penetrate depends on various factors. These include the amount of liquid, mattress absorbency, and cover material. Untreated urine can cause bad odor, mold growth, and harm the mattress’s integrity.
To prevent urine from seeping into the mattress, act quickly. Use paper towels or a clean cloth to blot up as much liquid as possible. Then, apply an enzymatic cleaner formulated for urine stains. Follow the instructions and let the cleaner fully penetrate the affected area. Avoid hot water or steam that can set the stain and odor.
If urine has already soaked into the mattress, contact a professional cleaning service. They have the necessary equipment and expertise to deep clean and sanitize your mattress, removing not only the visible stain but also any hidden bacteria and odor.
To prevent future accidents, consider getting a waterproof mattress protector. If your mattress is showing signs of wear, it may be time to replace it with a new one. A clean and comfortable mattress is essential for a good night's sleep and overall well-being. It's important to address urine stains promptly to prevent long-term damage to your mattress and for your health and hygiene.
