Firmness, Feel & Comfort of the Sealy Onyx Hybrid Review

The Sealy Onyx Hybrid is about a 5-7 on a 1-10 firmness scale - which makes it ideal for people that alternate between all 3 sleep positions regularly. These 3 sleep positions include: (a) back, (b) stomach & (c) side sleeping. Your ultimate goal is to find a compatible comfort level that matches your sleep style, body shape & mattress type preference. This is especially true for your long-term health & wellness.

Most people fall into 3 buckets - depending on your (1) weight and (2) sleep preference. These 3 buckets are: (a) light, (b) average, and (3) heavy sleepers.

Light Sleeper: Light sleepers (under 130 lbs), should be fine on a medium-firm mattress (5-6 on a 1-10 firmness scale). You'll experience healthy, stiff-ish resistance laying on top of the mattress. There's some 'give' to the mattress, but not much (since you're on the lighter side). Unless you know for a fact that you have sensitive pressure points, this resistance should not aggregavate your pressure points (in a lot of cases, it could help).

Average Sleeper: If you're an average sleeper (130-250 lbs), a medium-firm comfort level is your goldilocks zone. Keep in mind, comfort is very subjective - but a medium-firm is universally popular for a reason. It does the trick most of the time, especially if your weight range falls within 130-250 lbs.

Heavy Sleeper: If you're on the heftier side (>250 lbs), this firmness could work. It primarily depends on how familiar you are with your sleep preferences. Unless you know for a fact that you enjoy a (1) super soft or (2) super firm mattress, this medium-firmness should do the trick.

Construction & Design of the Sealy Onyx Hybrid Review

The Sealy Onyx Hybrid has innerspring coils for support & a gel memory foam comfort layer resting above.

Additionally, the tight-top does a fine job supporting your weight, providing a relatively wide sleep surface and decent edge support.

This hybrid memory foam and tight-top combination is a standard, modern mattress construction. Even in older, potentially discontinued (or very difficult to find) models like this one.

This is a 'tried-and-true' style, even if material quality is potentially lower than more premium, popular (and rightfully so) mattresses online (like a Saatva, Winkbed, or Puffy).

Support & Motion Isolation of the Sealy Onyx Hybrid Review

Support & motion isolation for Sealy Onyx Hybrid is fair (nothing exceptional).

The bottom innerspring coils combined with the gel memory foam do a fine job dissipating motion transfer across the mattress.

It's safe to say the Sealy Onyx Hybrid Mattress is likely built to last 3-5+ years (before it's time to replace it). This is one of the main reasons why it's difficult to recommend this mattress.

Availability of the Sealy Onyx Hybrid Review

This specific Sealy model, like many, are hard to find online. Availability is unreliable at best.

Large established brands usually release dozens of models (then stop producing them). This creates a confusing and difficult landscape to comparison shop.

Final Thoughts on the Sealy Onyx Hybrid Review

Breathability & Heat Transfer For Sealy Onyx Hybrid

The Sealy Onyx Hybrid uses very basic cooling tech in both their top cover and construction. Don't get confused when you see proprietary names. These are fancy marketing techniques to make otherwise normal features appear more sophisticated and better than they likely are.

There are 2 primary factors that affect cooling in a mattress: (1) does MODEL have decent airflow?, and (2) does the top cover and construction wick moisture & dissipate heat?

If those 2 benefits don't exist, heat created by your body at night can trap temperature pockets inside the mattress. These airflow issues create a furnace for anyone laying on the mattress at night. Rising heat in a mattress could potentially cause a loss of REM sleep. Losing REM sleep carries a whole host of other negative health consequences (way too many to list here).

In the case of the , there's a chance small heat pockets like this could form. It's exceedingly difficult to compare mattress models and technologies, so we usually recommend either: (1) calling Sealy directly to confirm specific features of technologies, or (2) consider a luxury online mattress company (almost always a better option). In the case of #2, we strongly recommend taking a look at Saatva.

Eco-Friendliness For Sealy Onyx Hybrid

The Sealy Onyx Hybrid is not an organic mattress. Eco-friendly? Maybe. It's difficult to measure because eco-friendliness is a very subjective (and often-times a very personal) assessment.

If eco-friendliness is your primary concern, we recommend considering e-commerce brands with much less potential physical footprint (since they have few-to-no physical stores).

The most comparable 100% organic brand we feel comfortable recommending is Zenhaven. Zenhaven is a 100% talalay latex mattress that's flippable and built unusually well for it's price point.

Pricing & Policies For Sealy Onyx Hybrid

Shipping, Delivery & Returns For Sealy Onyx Hybrid

Warranty & Exchanges For Sealy Onyx Hybrid

Sealy may allow you exchange, but it depends on the individual retailer.

This individual model's warranty typically relies on the specific law tag label 'code'. Mattress warranties can range from 1-25 years.

Quick tip - always check the 'law tag' on your mattress for extra instructions in the event of a return, exchange or warranty.

Checking your mattress's law tag is a good general practice with any mattress. Some exchange or warranty policies can have strict body impression requirements. For example, if your body impressions don't exceed 1.5 inches, you may not be able to return or exchange your mattress. This is a standard depth that most stores & brands use.

Where Can I Buy The Sealy Onyx Hybrid

There isn't much available information about where to buy a Sealy Onyx Hybrid mattress. This lack of information policies, too.

You may be able to find the at a physical mattress store near you. We find this to be very unlikely.

Normally, the retailer determines terms for: (1) shipping, (2) delivery, and (3) returns. All 3 (especially shipping) can vary fairly significantly between mattress retailer locations - which also depends on your state.

The above difficulty is why we recommend considering alternatives that you can find online.
